Lift the Lid is proud to announce the winner of the 5th Annual Writing Competition at Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya. Joan Chepngeno was chosen from nine finalists for her personal essay “Unforgettable Lesson.” She writes, “The music blaring from the speakers inside the bus sounded like screeching monkeys to me. My mood would not let me appreciate anything.” Click on the image below to read her shocking personal story about when she was wrongly jailed. (Double-click to magnify the print.)

Below you can see Joan accepting her award from Rev. Joseph Rono, our dear friend and contact at Mogonjet. She received the book GLASS GIRL by Laura Anderson Kurk, as well as $50 to put toward books/supplies for her class and $50 to put toward her personal school fees and supplies.

Joan, I can’t imagine what you’ve been through in prison. It shows tremendous strength that you have returned to school. Your essay “Unforgettable Lesson” describes your mood, the bus, each turn of events, and the finality of the police’s quick judgement very well. I was drawn into your experience and wanted justice for your sake.

Take strength from all your past experiences and keep moving forward with your eyes on your goals.

Joan, I’m so incredibly proud of you. Your essay is profoundly moving and shows that you have an inner strength that the majority of us do not possess. I find it so inspiring that you were able to turn this event into a lesson for yourself and for all those who will read your essay. God bless you, Joan!
