Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday the 19th of July to officially open their new tailor shop. There was dancing and singing, and the school and community expressed deep appreciation to all those who contributed towards the facility. Many thanks to those who supported Lift the Lid in giving $1250.00.

The new structure has one sewing machine. (See the photos below.) Mogonjet is hoping to buy one more sewing machine and two knitting machines for sweaters. The sewing machine costs KES 50,000, while one knitting machine costs KES 45,000, bringing the total amount to KES 140,000 or approximately $1,750.

Interviews were held to hire a tailor in early August, and the best candidate out of nine was chosen, Fancy Chelangat (19 yrs old). She has sufficient training and experience and can start work on the 1st of September. Once the shop is in operation, it is expected to generate income to pay the tailor’s wages, buy material, and boost the bursary kitty, which assists hardworking students who are unable to afford school fees. Mogonjet is welcoming the community and neighboring schools to the services soon to be available at the shop.
