New Books and Other Tools for The School in a Cart!

Throughout the fall of 2013, Lift the Lid donated $1 for every new Facebook ‘like’ we received. (You can visit our FB page here.) The show of support from family, friends, and friends of friends resulted in us sending a box of new early reader books, activity books, notepads, markers, pencils, and stickers to The School in a Cart in Cubao, the Philippines.
One very special book sent to The School in a Cart is NAUGHTY NO MORE written by one of our guest authors on the Writer’s Blog, Jodi Ann Mullen, PhD LMHC. The workbook helps children to make better decisions and, perhaps more importantly, it inspires children to share their stories of how they learned to choose good behavior. Thank you, Jodi, for your contribution to education and to Lift the Lid!
Principal Alfredo Olavidez holding NAUGHTY NO MORE by Jodi Ann Mullen, PhD LMHC. Alfredo recognizes the value of NAUGHTY NO MORE and is taking the time to write a Tagalog translation for the students.
Students of The School in a Cart appreciate every book that comes their way. Please help support this program which reaches out to the street children of Cubao. It’s up to us to give them the tools for learning!
We know that books, pencils, markers, etc. are incentives for the street children of 20th Street in Cubao, the Philippines to spend their free time at The School in a Cart, learning and getting a good meal–rather than roaming the city looking for money.
These children love to color. Love to take hold of any colorful book and even if they could not yet read, the pictures they see give them a good story which they themselves might have created in their minds. A pictures is powerful and may inspire different stories depending on the person looking at it.
We want to attract the street children for tutorial sessions so they will have something to do aside from jumping into jeepneys to distribute small letter envelops to commuters hoping that they’ll be returned to them with a few coins or bills.
Nothing makes this writer smile like seeing children with books in their hands! Heartfelt thanks to Jodi Ann Mullen, Principal Olavidez and everyone at Lift The Lid for making a difference in these precious children’s lives!
