Tears Turn to Joy, by Dolphine Moraa
A sincere thank you from Lift the Lid and Lenana Girls High School in Kitale, Kenya to Teri Geisenhof. Her Christmas donation will advance our goals for the school and the students. This past year, we have been working to implement The Miracle Project to make reusable menstrual cups available to the girls; we’ve built a water well; and we’ve assisted select conscientious students with their school fees. Our latest project, going into 2015, is to take part in helping Lenana build a science laboratory. Science is an integral part of life, and students need more than books to fully understand its purpose.
Fifteen-year-old Dolphine Moraa would like to share her inspirational story of how she made it from primary school to secondary school after taking Kenya’s National Exam (KCPE) twice. She also describes the luck she and her father had in physically getting to Lenana Girls High School on the first day of classes. (They started out on foot.) Her personal essay is called “Tears Turn to Joy.” Thank you, Teri!
Dolphine,
Thank you for sharing your story of how your made it to Lenana Girls High School. I hope it inspires other girls to keep their minds on their educational goals and to give their best to their exams, no matter how many times they have to take them.
“Tears Turn to Joy” is a very well written essay with strong emotional impact. I felt your disappointment having to postpone your studies for two years, and then your happiness making it to Lenana Girls High School!
I look forward to reading your essay in Lenana’s Third Annual Writing Competition in 2015. (I hope you submit one!) You were very close to placing last year. Keep writing!
