Kakuma
Why Kakuma Refugee Camp?
Located in the remote northwestern region of Turkana County, Kenya, Kakuma Refugee Camp was established in 1992 and is currently home to over 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict, instability, and persecution across East and Central Africa. Despite being one of the largest refugee settlements in the world, opportunities for college and technical education remain highly limited, leaving thousands of bright refugee youth without a clear pathway toward financial independence or self-reliance.
In Kakuma, youth face systemic exclusion from the modern digital economy. While basic schooling exists (up to secondary level), valuable, marketable skills development is severely lacking, especially in technology and digital literacy. Without access to computers, internet connectivity, and market-relevant technical training, refugee high school graduates cannot access higher education opportunities, participate in the global digital workforce, or build sustainable livelihoods within or beyond the camp.
