We are grateful to author Connie Mann for taking the time to host four writing workshops for our 5th- and 6th-grade students at Keneni Stars Academy, the primary school Lift the Lid sponsors in Bomet, Kenya. Lift the Lid has hosted annual writing competitions at Keneni (and across all our schools) since the school began. The children understand the value of vivid writing, brainstorming, research when necessary, and the importance of clear communication in school, work, and life.

Connie read short stories to the students and asked discussion questions after each one to get them thinking. Although there were many crowded around one table, they listened and enjoyed sharing their thoughts one at a time. Connie then helped them brainstorm and develop their own stories, focusing on characters, setting, conflict, and resolution.

Learning to communicate one's thoughts is an essential skill, and we attribute our students' high national exam marks to Lift the Lid's focus on organizing thoughts and expressing them in writing.
