Bad Company Spoils Good Morals, by Anneth Chepkemoi

Many thanks to Jane J. for supporting Lift the Lid in improving our sponsored schools and encouraging the students to realize their creative power through writing. Anneth Chepkemoi of Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya won an Honorable Mention in Mogonjet’s 5th Annual Writing Competition hosted by Lift the Lid. She’s happy to share her personal essay in return.
Anneth writes about a time when her friends led her into trouble with the police. The encounter turns violent, unfortunately, which may come as a shock to some readers. In the end, it is a lesson learned, and we’re grateful Anneth wasn’t hurt. She concludes, “From that day, I leant that being in bad company makes one’s life miserable. I leant that I should choose my friends wisely so as to succeed in life.”
Thank you to all our supporters. We hope you can take the time to read Anneth’s brave and thoughtful essay.

Anneth, I’m sorry you had to learn through a frightening experience which friends you can and cannot trust. I hope you are never tempted again by those with poor judgement. It is true that we have to be on our guard for people with bad intentions – they like company.
You are bright and conscientious and will find good-hearted, thoughtful friends throughout your life. If you stumbled upon lonely times, turn to your books, take up new (positive) hobbies that could open the door to new friendships, remember you’re never alone with God, and be patient. Like you said, if you stay on the right path, life will be full and rewarding. I have compete faith in you, Anneth!

Anneth, that sounds like a terrifying experience. You described it so vividly! I can see why this essay won an award, you use strong words to make the story real to readers. You clearly have a gift for writing that you can work to develop.
I hope you’ve found better friends now to support you in following a path that is more true and honest, and also that you have stronger confidence to trust in your knowledge of what is right.
God will always be with you.
Nice one keep it up
