Faith Nyakinya Preparing for Lenana Girls High School

Right now, 25 of the brightest and poorest children in Trans-Nzoia, Kenya are being selected to start their Pre-form One education at Pathfinder Primary School in preparation to join Lenana Girls High School in 2014. Let me tell you about one of them – Faith.

Faith lives with her mother, father, and two brothers in a mud house without electricity. She shares a mattress with her siblings and a toilet with her neighbors.  Her father sells vegetables from a wooden stall, and her mother washes clothes for people in the village.

At school, Faith and 120 other students share a classroom with limited resources and poorly trained teachers. In spite of this, Faith is one of the top students in her class and her passion for learning continues at home where she often teaches her brothers. The few school exercise books she has are wrapped carefully in old newspapers to keep them clean since her house is always dusty. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she says,”I want to sell vegetables.”

Recently Faiths’s mother heard about Pre-form One selection from friends. After taking reading and writing exams with thousands of other hopeful children, Faith received a place at Pathfinder Academy in preparation for Lenana Girls High School in 2014, when the construction of the school is expected to be completed.

By receiving a free, high-quality education at Pathfinder Academy, Faith can now DARE TO DREAM – a dream beyond selling vegetables. No longer will she be bound by the cycle of poverty that her parents and grandparents have endured. Faith is one of 25 new students who will start at Pathfinder Primary School in 2013 in preparation for Lenana Girls High School in 2014 .
