Last August, Lift the Lid volunteers and I went to the Giraffe Center in Nairobi, Kenya, before flying back to the States, after visiting our schools: Lenana Girls’ High School in Kitale and Keneni Stars Academy in Bomet County. We also met with students at Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, where LTL hosts an annual writing competition and provides scholarships to the most disadvantaged students. We loved meeting the giraffes at the Giraffe Center and learning how the Center has been breeding and rearing them for reintroduction to the wild since 1983. When we read that the Center offers a writing competition to Kenyan students, we encouraged Keneni Stars to enter!
This year’s theme was “Partnership in Conservation for a Healthy Planet and People,” and from over 5,000 entries (including 2,000 artworks) across 37 of Kenya’s 48 counties, our Lameck Kipchirchir was selected as an upper primary runner-up winner! We raised the funds to bring 6 students (including Lameck) and two teachers to The Giraffe Center on June 19th for the prize-giving ceremony and a visit with the giraffes!!
As we’ve said before, learning to communicate one’s thoughts is an essential skill, and we attribute our students’ numerous honors and high marks on national exams to Lift the Lid’s focus on essay writing.
