Do Not Judge a Book By Its Cover, by Caroline Chepkemoi

Caroline Chepkemoi is the Second Place winner of the 2013 4th Annual Writing Competition at Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya.
Lift the Lid is proud to share her essay “Do Not Judge a Book By Its Cover” with Johanna and Tim, who made a significant donation to her school. Caroline, in her essay, addresses how easy it is to be duped into a situation of rape. She is courageous for telling her story, and she sets an example for other young girls should they find themselves held against their will. We are all relieved that Caroline’s story ends triumphant.

Caroline, I admire you for sharing your experience with your peers, Lift the Lid, and students around the world. You faced the betrayal of your friend and the men who intended to harm you with courage and dignity. You have the qualities of a true leader.
I hope to read more of your writing in the future. Open your heart and mind to the possibilities!
Yours,
Sara
Caroline, your story really impressed me and made me so thankful that you were brave enough to scream and get help! I hope many young girls are able to read this and take warning. It’s important to know who you can really trust, and many times, difficult! When we are betrayed by a ‘friend’, it’s hard to trust anyone again, but I hope you will. There are many good people in the world. Congratulations on a great essay and on your courageous decisions–to scream, and to write this! Keep up your studies. I wish you the very best! Johanna
