Oprah Winfrey is The Woman I Most Admire, by Diana Cherop
We are grateful for Caroline’s donation to Lenana Girls High School in Kitale, Kenya and would like to give her Diana Cherop’s essay on Oprah Winfrey, her role model, as our show of thanks. Caroline has contributed in the past, and we are proud to report on the progress the girls are making in their writing!
Caroline’s contribution is sponsoring one student at Lenana Girls High School for a full year, which includes room and board, uniforms, books, and of course, classes. We’ll post a Thank You letter from her sponsored student soon.
Diana Cherop, also a sponsored student, is the Second Place winner of Lenana’s 3rd Annual Writing Competition hosted by Lift the Lid. She will receive $25 to put toward her education, plus a copy of “What I Know For Sure” by Oprah Winfrey. Here is her winning essay:
Diana, I’ve been eager to share your essay on your role model! It is well-written, and I really enjoyed learning about Oprah’s life, how she was raised by her grandmother on a farm and got so much out of going to church. Congratulations on your work!!
I’ve sent your essay to someone I know who works for Oprah.com. Perhaps they will be interested in using it. It’s not easy to get the attention of editors in large companies, so in the meantime, I hope you enjoy Oprah’s book “What I Know For Sure,” and keep writing!!

Hi Diana – thank you so much for sharing your essay. I loved the image of Little Oprah and her grandmother huddled under the quilt. You made me feel her fear by telling me about the menacing grandfather casting a shadow, and I hope Oprah has come out from under that shadow. I liked hearing she read the Bible and rode pigs.
