The Long Awaited Day, by Fancy Chepkirui
Many thanks to Michael and Mary for their donation to Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya. Their contribution will go toward our fund which sponsors students who cannot afford fees for school, books, and uniforms. Our first goal at Lift the Lid is to help students complete their education. Our second goal is to enhance their education with a focus on writing.
Fancy Chepkirui was a finalist in last year’s writing competition hosted by Lift the Lid. In her essay The Long Awaited Day, she writes, “I woke up at dawn, happy that I was finally going to fly out of the country.” Fancy goes on to explain in painful detail how she missed her flight. She knows how to tell a story, and we’re happy to encourage her writing by sharing her essay.
Fancy, I enjoyed your essay The Long Awaited Day and read it several times! You have a natural way of telling your story, from setting it up (getting ready for your long anticipated trip) to letting it unfold (with the countdown to your plane taking off without you.) I also like how you end with perspective: a hard lesson learned.
You can be proud to have made it to the finals in Mogonjet and Lift the Lid’s 2014 Writing Competition. I hope you continue to write and develop your talent for storytelling!
