Do Not Judge a Book By Its Cover, by Caroline Chepkemoi

Lift the Lid is truly grateful for Tami Constantino’s donation to Mogonjet Secondary School in Kericho, Kenya. One of our immediate goals at Mogonjet is to complete a tailoring shop, which will provide income for the school and allow the students to buy their uniforms onsite rather than travel miles to the nearest store. This will be the first business venture Mogonjet is trying in order to generate funds for the improvement of the school and the students’ education.

To show our appreciation, Caroline Chepkemoi from Form Five shares a personal essay she wrote. Caroline was chosen as the Second Place winner of Mogonjet’s Fourth Annual Writing Competition sponsored by Lift the Lid. Below is her winning essay “Do Not Judge a Book By Its Cover.”

Caroline has also written a thoughtful Thank You letter to Lift the Lid and shares how she spent a portion of her prize money to help those who are less fortunate in her community. You can read her letter here.

Wow, what a powerful essay. What a learning experience. We can all relate on one level or another on Judging a book by it’s cover and how difficult it can be. I’m thankful you were saved by the passer-by-er’s. Please continue to make friends and realize not everyone is a bad person. In the future I hope you’re friends are loyal to you and treat you with the respect you deserve. I’m glad you decided to write your experience down on paper because it helps to heal from the hurt you experienced and you are also a great writer! Keep up the good work!
